Description
Edit
This template is to be used to reference topics or individual posts on the Tales forums or on other forums. It should be used exclusively in <ref></ref> reference tags (see Wikipedia:Footnotes).
If referencing individual posts, please use the exact post URL, and not the URL to a certain page. (To do this on PHPBB forums [like the Tales forums], quote the post in question. In the URL, there will be a variable called p whose value is a number. This number is the ID number of that exact post. Go to your forums' "viewtopic.php", and type in after the php:
?p=xxxxxx#xxxxxx
where the "x" are the ID number (length can vary; not necessarily the same amount of digits as Xs). Note that you have to input the ID twice: one after the p=, then a pound/number sign #, then the ID again.)
Syntax
Edit
{{Cite topic|name=topic name|url=topic or post url|user=topic or post poster|date=date|post=1 or 0|site=site name|siteurl=site url}}
- name and url are mandatory.
- user, post, date, site and siteurl are optional.
- name is the title of the topic.
- url is the URL to either the topic or the post. Please don't add unnecessary bloat to the URL—keep only the topic or post ID. To find out how to link directly to a post, see the Description section above.
- user is the username of the person who posted either the topic or the URL. It is optional.
- date is the date and time of the post or topic. Please use 24-hour UTC] time (UTC being, for this purpose, the same as GMT time).
- post can take on two values: 1 or 0. 1 means that the URL given is a post, while 0 means it's a thread. (This is basically boolean TRUE/FALSE.)
- site is optional. It is the name of the forum on which the topic was posted. If the topic is on the Tales forums, don't include site name.
- siteurl is optional. It is the URL to the index of the forum. If the topic is on the Tales forums, don't include site url.
- {{Cite thread}} is an alternative name to this template.
- {{Cite post}} is an alternative name to this template.
- If you decide to put newlines in the template to make it easier to edit, make sure you don't add one after the closing brackets }} nor after the </ref> tag.
Note on UTC time
Edit
If you are unfamiliar with the 24-hour clock and UTC time, please note the following:
- AM times stay as they are in 24-hour; to convert a PM time to 24-hour, add twelve hours.
- Midnight is 0:00.
- UTC time is, for non-scientific purposes, the same as GMT.
- UTC/GMT time zones stay the same despite Daylight Savings Time—they don't take it into account.
- For example, if you live in American Eastern time, Eastern Standard Time (no daylight savings, i.e. winter time) is GMT-5, but Eastern Daylight Time (with daylight savings, i.e. summer time) is GMT-4.
Note on forum URLs
Edit
Please strip your URLs down to the bare minimum needed to link directly to the topic or post. For example, on a PHPBB forum (like the Tales forums):
- If you did a search, chances are there will be a &highlight=search term (where "search term" is what you searched). It's not necessary; take it out.
- With some computers, the forum might send out &sid=(really long string of hexadecimal) (where the really long string is a long string of hexadecimal, that is to say numbers and letters a to f). It only serves to keep you logged in (it shouldn't work if someone uses the sid from another IP address, though). Take it out.
